Great leaders are often skilled communicators. Indeed, strong communication skills enable leaders to be well understood by those they lead and put them in a good position to inspire and empower those very same people. Effective communication is an essential skill every leader should possess and continually work on.

Truly transformational leaders are almost without exception effective communicators.  They are able to think with clarity, express ideas, and share compelling strategies with a wide range of audiences inside and outside the organization. Effective communication allows leaders to deepen connections, build trust, and drive creativity and innovation through all their interpersonal interactions.

While there may be certain people who appear to be natural communicators, the majority of leaders must work to develop strong communication skills across oral and written modalities through diligent practice and the application of proven techniques.

Core Traits of Successful Leadership Communication

The best leaders/communicators infuse these core communication traits into their leadership style:

1) They communicate consistently and persistently: Whether it’s through meetings, speeches, emails, videos, social media, or podcasts, they remain on message with all relevant parties. And they retain this level of consistent communication through both good times and difficult times.

2) They’re direct about what they want to say: They don’t hide behind jargon, intentional complexity, or smokescreens of random data. More importantly, they simplify and distill their messaging to appeal to diverse audiences. They know that direct, clear communication is what people want.

3) They illustrate through the use of stories and metaphors: Telling good stories or using memorable metaphors builds trust and credibility, captures hearts and minds, and serves later as an effective reminder of the message.

4) They’re fully prepared: They’ve done their homework, both in terms of subject matter and their audience. If they’re met with resistance or presented with a conflicting position, their solid preparation makes it easier to better address and process such objections with an open mind and clear thinking.

5) They know their audience: Communication isn’t just about what someone is saying, it’s also about who’s listening. Good communicators recognize that different stakeholders may have different interests and concerns. They tailor their messaging for a particular audience and consider that person’s or group’s personality, goals, and objectives, as well as their roles and responsibilities.

6) They reinforce their messaging through the use of aligned body language: Eye contact, head nodding, a reassuring smile, and other relaxed nonverbal communications can inspire team members and make them feel more comfortable. What they say verbally matches their body language, which sends a congruent message. This makes them convincing and trustworthy communicators.

7) They take feedback seriously: Candid feedback from a team or employees can foster a positive stream of communication, which also builds overall trust.  When a leader listens intently and then acts on feedback received, it makes team members feel more respected and valued. Leaders who take feedback seriously grow in the eyes of various publics.

8) They ask powerful or thought-provoking questions: Such questions open the door to learning what others think, know and feel. The best leadership questions cut through complicated or difficult situations, address the “elephant in the room,” and identify pathways that will really make a difference.

9) They practice active listening: Active listening is the ability to fully engage with and understand other perspectives. It requires leaders to put aside their own biases and opinions, and truly listen to what their team members have to say and understand their needs, concerns, and perspectives. Active listening helps build trust, foster collaboration, and identify potential problems and opportunities.

10) They demonstrate empathy: Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Empathy allows leaders to connect on a personal level, making team members feel that their leader understands them, cares about them, and can understand and address issues that may be impacting the morale or productivity of the team.
